THE LEGACY OF
VICTOR EMMANUEL II
BENEFICIAL SOCIETY
Established in 1915 by 21 Italian visionaries, our Beneficial Society Victor Emmanuel II has stood as a cornerstone in Reading, consistently supporting members through challenges and enhancing the Italian community’s moral and social stature. Taking our name from Victor Emmanuel II, the unifier of Italy in 1861, our society quickly evolved into a pivotal meeting place for the community. By 1946, at our Penn Street hub, we began to showcase authentic Italian cuisine, which immensely elevated our reputation and influence. 1949 marked the inception of our Ladies Auxiliary, a backbone to the society’s many ventures.
In 1965, commemorating our 50th anniversary, we introduced a scholarship for Italian-descent students in Berks County. Facing redevelopment challenges, we made a bold move to Hazel Street in 1972, where our culinary prowess continued to flourish. 1978 brought the launch of another scholarship, catering to the children of our esteemed Lodge and Auxiliary members. From our simple start to our recognized role in the community, we value our focus on education and our position as a provider of authentic Italian specialties, honoring Italian traditions.
Celebrate with us as we honor our rich heritage and immerse yourself in our lively Italian American community!
